I've mentioned before that I am a broke-ass librarian supporting a family of four while my husband works on his Ph.D. I completely support the aforementioned doctoral program, but this choice along with our choice for me to stay home for a couple of years after the birth of our second child, has meant that the Bannens have been just getting by financially for several years now.
Enter a book deal. It's not that we're rolling in it (spoiler: we're not), but for once we have some breathing room, and in light of current events, I've decided to use that breathing room to support causes that make America great. Given the anti-immigrant rhetoric of the recent presidential election (*shudders in revulsion*) it seems to me that one good thing we can all do is help refugees settle in our neighborhoods. To that end, I'm supporting an organization in the Kansas City area called New Roots for Refugees: "New Roots for Refugees, a program started by Catholic Charities in partnership with Cultivate KC, helps refugee women put down new roots by helping them to start their own small farm businesses growing and selling vegetables." So this organization 1.) welcomes refugees into my community, 2.) supports women, 3.) promotes small business, and 4.) keeps food production local and environmentally-friendly. Win, win, win, and win. Are there organizations in your community that serve a similar purpose? How can you support similar work in your area? What can you do to make American great?
