I know some people out there are saying that they voted for a platform or the for the chance to get a right-leaning judge on the Supreme Court. But let us be clear: If, in your mind, you can justify a vote for an openly racist, bigoted, misogynist, anti-queer, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant monster, that means on some level YOU are racist, bigoted, misogynist, anti-queer, anti-Muslim, and anti-immigrant. I implore you to search your soul.
Here's another hard truth: those of us who are shocked by the election results are probably privileged white people. Yes, some of us are women who have had to deal with rampant sexism, but on the whole we haven't had to face the extreme level of discrimination our PoC or immigrant or queer or non-Christian or disabled countrymen/woman have had to face every single day. We're shocked because we were blind.
Well, the blinders are off now. It's time to make America great, quite possibly for the first time ever. Do something. Write letters to your representatives in government at all levels. Stand with your fellow citizens when something demands civil protest. Donate time and money to institutes that make America a better place: HeadStart, the Equal Justice Initiative, the list goes on and on. Support movies, books, plays, art, music that offer important representation of marginalized groups.
Make America great. It's on us now.
